Sweat it out with Sally at Poughkeepsie’s Engaging Lagree Fitness Studio

Hudson Valley native Sally Torreggiani, the face of “Sweat With Sally,” teaches Lagree fitness building on dynamic microforming machines.

Getting around in the Hudson Valley is easy.

For starters, there are a ton of beginner-friendly hikes in the area. Additionally, local rail trails welcome runners, cyclists, and brisk walkers. Likewise, this area has many indoor fitness centers. Soothing yoga studios, energetic spin classes, and MMA gyms offer many workout styles.

Of course, exercise is not a “one size fits all” practice. Certain movements and training approaches can wreak havoc on the knees, lower back and other sensitive areas. Plus, joint pain and minor injuries can hamper even the most motivated.

According to local Sally Torreggiani, Lagree fitness combines the cardio of Pilates with the strength training of yoga.

“I discovered Lagree fitness in 2016 and thought, ‘Oh wow, that’s like me as a workout.’ It was intense. It was high energy. It was a lot of fun,” says Torreggiani, who owns fitness studio Poughkeepsie Lagree Sweat With Sally (formerly known as Studio 8). the constant challenge of training. I’ve been doing gymnastics all my life and after my first session I was in pain for four or five days, which can be daunting.

Her Hudson Valley fitness journey began in 2014. First, she earned a 200-hour yoga certification to teach. Torreggiani taught his first students at Gold’s Gym in Fishkill. Then she opened a Pilates/sports training center in Red Hook. There, she earned a 450-hour certification.


“I absolutely loved teaching Pilates and yoga together because it felt like you could do this for a lifetime. It’s really low impact. It’s good for your joints and strengthens your core and all the right muscles,” she says.

Torreggiani’s father owns a business in Poughkeepsie and has found the perfect space for a fitness studio. Since childhood, Torreggiani had dreamed of owning his own fitness center or gymnastics school. She named the place Studio 8, in a nod to the Hudson Valley area code 845. Additionally, the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce recognized her efforts with the “40 Under 40” award in 2017.

Eventually, she opened a space at Fishkill. Many of his clients lived in Beacon and Garrison. Plus, Fishkill offered tons of foot traffic. However, when the pandemic hit, she permanently closed her doors from South Holland and renamed the space Poughkeepsie.


And so, Sweatshirt with Sally was born.

She teaches about 20 classes a week in person and several more online via Zoom and video-on-demand classes. Torreggiani has equipped his studio with six state-of-the-art megaformer (M3S) machines. Each machine has two beds and a carriage that slides back and forth.

“IIt’s just resistance training with spring loads instead of actual weights…it’s basically a full body workout on a single machine that you don’t step off of,” says Torreggiani. “It is therefore mainly about kernel. There are a lot of planks and then we add leg movements, [also] work our glutes. Then we do exercises for the arms and obliques.

She caps Lagree’s fitness classes at six. Certainly, Sweat With Sally creates a balance between private sessions and group lessons. Everyone gets a lot of instructional attention, but no one has to feel the burn alone.

The full-body class, titled “Arms, Abs, and Ass,” immerses studio goers in Lagree’s challenging but rewarding method of fitness. Torreggiani motivates with 50 minutes of upbeat music and lots of laughs along the way. In fact, she honed her sense of humor on the stand-up comedy scene, at the suggestion of her friend, Alexandria Gilleo. (Gilleo is a Hudson Valley makeup artist and owner of several health and beauty businesses, including Bridal by Alexandria and My Zen Den in Beacon.)

For Lagree fitness newbies, Torreggiani is offering a $10 first-class special.

“I want people to ride the machine at least like three [times] so they can kind of figure out if it’s absolutely for them or not. The first time can certainly be a lot to learn. However, they will see results in six weeks,” she says. Above all, Torreggiani wants to help its clients become stronger and more in tune with their bodies. For almost every move in the Lagree Fitness Workout, she offers a less intense modification. Sweat With Sally designs exercise regimens that work on your muscles, while having a low impact on your spine, joints and connective tissue.

“Modifications never mean you are weak. They mean you are a great listener and listen to your body. Everyone is allowed to have their own limits on the [megaformer] machine and in the classroom.


Initially, when Torreggiani found Lagree’s fitness, she had lower back issues. Cardio training didn’t hurt his back or knees, and there were no jumps. She could have hurt without hurting herself. After this experience, she was determined to share these techniques with people of all ages and fitness levels.

Above all, Lagree exercises slow-twitch muscle fibers. These fat-burning muscles focus on small movements and posture control. Through Sweat With Sally classes, students develop muscular endurance, which can be a great complement to yoga. Improving core strength improves overall balance and improves controlled breathing practices.

For example, Torreggiani’s emphasis on plank work leads to success in poses like Warrior 2. When steamy hot yoga classes can last over 90 minutes, stamina is key. Additionally, Lagree Fitness helps avid distance runners and hikers open up their hips.

Often, they start to compete with themselves for the moves they want to accomplish, which is fun to watch,” enthuses Torreggiani. “I want them to feel stronger and really empowered after class, whether it’s on Zoom or in person.”

His Zoom classes range from 30 minutes to 60 minutes and include live Zoom lessons and pre-recorded instructional videos. She offers Lagree fitness classes, as well as yoga, Pilates, personal sports training, and more. Home students use a smaller version of the M3S machine, dubbed the microformer. They can purchase these machines from the Lagree website. However, Torreggiani is also promoting a lower cost alternative. With a set of resistance bands, skates, and light weights, students can achieve a complete Sweat With Sally workout.

In fact, Torreggiani trains British actress Emily Mortimer several times a week from her place in New York.

“Sally is simply the best coach I’ve ever had. She’s incredibly kind and personable, but also sets high standards and wants you to see positive results quickly,” Mortimer said. Hudson Valley magazine. “Because of her former life as a top gymnast, she has an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and how to identify certain muscles, making effective changes safely.” Mortimer is known for her work in films like Lars and the real girl, shutter island, and Hugo. While Sweat With Sally builds an online community, Torreggiani lends her expertise and sense of humor to outlets like TikTok. Above all, it strives to keep a space where everyone can feel comfortable sharing awkward stories or awkward situations at the gym. Plus, it always helps to laugh at the awkward positions she often places her students in during a session.

I love the fitness industry, but I think there’s so much focus on a specific body type or fit – and, I mean, it’s a billion dollar industry. People should feel good after they leave. I want them to open up and I want them to smile,” Torreggiani says. The Lagrée fitness challenge is for everyone.
