Bulldog Gear, on New Road Industrial Estate, Hixon, near Stafford, was founded in 2011 on a loan from the Prince’s Trust and is now one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of gym equipment.

Major customers include Red Bull, a well-known search engine, and elite British and American military units, as well as thousands of fitness and home workout enthusiasts.

In 2021, sales increased due to an increase in customer and business demand for high quality fitness equipment. However, there has also been a 300% increase in steel prices in the UK, a 500% increase in shipping costs worldwide and raw material increases across the board.

To address these challenges, Bulldog enlisted the help of MGP, and Chief Growth Officer Phillip Somers supported the company through three grant-funded projects that improved Bulldog Gear’s chances of success. Phil helped the company identify its key areas for improvement using an industry-leading business diagnostic tool that highlighted productivity and capacity as areas for improvement.

It was identified that the company needed to integrate more in-house manufacturing. This could improve quality, increase productivity, improve profits and better control its supply chain. The company was already experiencing strong growth and needed to improve systems and processes to increase productivity and efficiency to meet demand, avoid bottlenecks and deliver on time.

Mr. Somers said: “Bulldog Gear is a high growth company and Kieran, the MD, realizes that taking the time to step back and work on the business rather than getting stuck in day-to-day business has had a real advantage. to his business by reviewing his business, identifying growth opportunities and implementing them with external experts.

MGP’s support enabled Bulldog Gear to fund a consultant to conduct research and development, and an outside expert to help select and use a new enterprise resource planning solution. (ERP system. MGP also provided a capital grant for the purchase of an automatic CNC tube bender, which enabled more manufacturing to be internalized. This improved productivity and efficiency, and supported reduction of CO2 emissions Since the start of the three MGP projects, 14 new jobs have been created, a new product for the company has been launched and a strong increase in GVA has been reported.

When asked what advice he would give to a company considering using MGP, Managing Director Kieran Heinich said: whether it be in terms of software, financing, plant and machinery or experts in matter in terms of consultants, etc. Use their services, they are at your doorstep and all it takes is a phone call.

The company’s future plans include purchasing additional plant and machinery, designing and building their state-of-the-art manufacturing and processing center, and implementing and launching new patented products.
