High-tech fitness studio Exercise Coach opens in West Chester


A new gymnasium has opened in West Chester Township, which is not your traditional training venue.

Fitness enthusiasts Billy Cottle and Veronica Sterling opened The Exercise Coach studio on June 2 after a year-long research process into what the brand had to offer.

Instead of traditional exercise equipment like dumbbells, resistance bands or stability balls, the franchise fitness studio uses computers and robotics paired with personalized instructions to deliver 20-minute workouts. minutes.

Having suffered from exercise-related injuries before and having recently become parents, the couple decided The Exercise Coach was what they needed.

“As we get older we try to avoid injury, and we have a child so we don’t have time,” Sterling said. “So we like the 20 minutes, twice a week. “

Cottle explained that part of the reason they chose The Exercise Coach was its appeal to middle-aged and older adults with busy lives, “a demographic that no one really serves.”

“We felt that there weren’t enough fitness options for those 40 and over, or for those who just aren’t interested in a typical gym. They tend to be busier and more reluctant to go to the gym, “Cottle said.” The basis of building strength and efficiency to get results with just two 20-minute workouts per week was an obvious choice for us. ”

A trip to the studio gave us a better understanding of how exactly The Exercise Coach works.

How the exercises work

Five weight machines line up against one wall, while the other has three high-intensity cardio machines. The studio benefits from natural light and fresh air, thanks to a garage door that opens to the back wall.

The machines are tuned to a client’s exact capacity level, which means they maximize muscle building without the risk of overwork or injury.

To see exactly how it worked, I tried out some of the machines, all of which come with a screen monitor to track progress.

A computerized machine tests new clients to determine baseline muscle condition and the level of resistance required to work best for their bodies.

Once this is saved, the screen will show a graph with a green line in the shape of a short and wide bell curve that you must follow in order to stay within your predetermined strength range for each repetition.

We started on the leg press, where I pushed off the base with as much effort as needed to follow along the green line. I held for two seconds at the top before the machine reversed and my legs went into resistance mode, while staying close to the green line that is now going down.

Following the line was difficult, but you get used to it after a few sessions.

When the set is complete, you receive immediate feedback from the computer and your trainer. The machines also automatically make the exercises more difficult as the client gets stronger.

A typical day’s workout includes repetitions of eight to 10 workouts, incorporating not only strength training but also high-intensity cardio, like a stationary interval training bike that gets your heart racing in just four minutes. .

Cottle explained that their goal is to use strength training to activate muscles not typically used in everyday life, which can start to deteriorate at age 40. He said these exercises can help reverse this deterioration.

The exercise trainer also offers a nutritional playbook with “guidelines for making small improvements in everyday life,” Sterling said.

How to check it

Sessions range from $ 25 to $ 50 and there can be one to four people with a trainer at a time.

The studio is located at 8104 Beckett Center Drive, West Chester Township. Hours of operation are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Exercise Coach offers you two free sessions to familiarize you with the machines and the programs.

COVID-19 Directives: Cottle and Sterling said customers can decide whether or not to wear a mask. As for coaches, they will continue to wear masks and wipe down equipment after each use.
